awwww… he wants to date you!!!
ARGH!!!
Someone luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurves you!!!
Just had a cracking bit of get-out-of-it advice from a male friend of mine:
“bite the bullet and go, but cause so much offence that he decides you’re the worst person on earth and that he can clearly do better than date a evil mysogonistic (?sp?) prejudiced paranoid schizophrenic.”
It’s almost worth doing just for the blogging fodder after the event…
But no, I need to get rid… More ideas please.
Ummmm…. do you work with this person? If so you can always say you have a rule about not mixing business with pleasure. That’s gotten me out of alot.
No, sadly I don’t really “work with” him. I met him at a work networking function that my company organised so yeah there is the work link there, but not a direct working relationship. I think that I am going to email him saying that I am seeing someone and thanks for the offer.
Unless anyone has any better ideas?
A firm but straight and honest no should suffice.
Agree to go.
Say you want to bring your boyfriend and is he bringing his girlfriend\wife.
or
Say you want to bring your dad so that he’ll have someone closer to his age to talk to.
or
Cancel at the last minute.
or
Bring a presentation and members of your team with you.
or
Say you need to arrange a baby sitter, unless he objects to you bringing along a precocious three year old.
or
Turn up in a wedding dress.
or
Tell him you can’t eat cheese, or eggs, or seafood or anything really “because of the baby”.
or
You aren’t allowed to drink as it interferes with the medication that you’re on. It’s non specific or so they said at the clinic.
or
You could just mix and match these as you like. I could probably come up with more but it’s so tiring coming up with excuses that don’t make you sound bad.
Or ask one of your colleagues to email him and tell him that you died yesterday. He might stop asking you after that.
Froggy- nice ideas. Perhaps I will use all of them…
Absolutely - have considered that. But when we are both at the next event he might think I am Christ reborn or something.
Ok, I have gone with the following reply:
Hi Small Man,
We really appreciate any feedback that our [blah blah blah] members provide, and it was kind of you to name us in person in your praise. I think Sales Girl’s manager is especially pleased with how well the event went. They are now working really hard at expanding the [something something something] in other regions and developing the next round of events.
I expect I will see you at the next event, although the dates have not been finalised yet. As soon as these have been, we will send out some information and a programme leaflet. If you could have any of your colleagues interested in joining contact Sales Girl directly, she will be able to arrange their membership and ensure that they are on the database to receive these alerts.
Best wishes,
Blue soup
Polite? But effectively ignoring the meal?
Sales Director reckons by repeating that I will next see him at a work event (as I did in my initial mail before he sent me the above) will reassert that I only want a working relationship… What do yes think?
Dreadful. Tell him you’re already loved up & eternally faithful ( ie lie…well the latter at least )
Alternatively go. That’ll teach the bastard !
very polite and offering that you will see him at a work thing rather than a non work thing is subtle but should hopefully make a no a bit more pleasant…sort of!
good luck! :o)
Hamish - that’s enough out of you.
Miles away - Thanks! I think that luck worked. I got this reply:
Hi Blue soup,
I will contact be in contact with Sales Girl as I do have colleagues who will be interested in joining the [blah blah blah]. If you could spare the time to meet for lunch or maybe dinner or maybe drinks prior to the next event that would be great, if not I look forward to meeting you again at the next seminar.
Thank you again for a great event.
Small Man
So, he’s still trying, but I think he knows that it just isn’t going to happen…
I think you got the message over rather succinctly . Well done.
